Program Highlights and Schedules for January - March 2002

Program # Feed Date Title
02-01 1/3/02 Best of 2001
Our first program of the new year will review some of the best Celtic releases of 2001, leading up to the announcement of the "Celtic Connections Album of the Year."

02-02 1/10/02 The Many Melodies of Paddy Moloney
Head Chieftain Paddy Moloney, master of uilleann pipes and tin whistle as well as a prolific composer and arranger, has had a longer and more widely recognized career than practically anyone else in Irish music, and he's still going strong. This week's program will sample some of the highlights of his copious output of recordings.

02-03 1/17/02 Songs of Robert Burns
Born January 25, 1759, Robert Burns continues to occupy the most central role in Scotland's long tradition of song-writing. An impressive roster of singers will help us celebrate his birthday in this week's program, minus the haggis!

02-04 1/24/02 Concertinas Rule!
This small instrument has been a mighty force in traditional Irish music, and in this week's program we'll hear it in the hands of the best players, including Noel Hill, John Williams, Niall Vallely, and Gearoid O hAllmhurain.

02-05 1/31/02 Old Favorites
On Celtic Connections, we like to keep the great recordings of previous years in circulation, as well as keeping abreast of new releases. Tune in this week for some great vocals and instrumentals from the past three decades.

02-06 2/7/02 New Releases
The first arrivals of 2002, along with recent releases from last year, will be featured in this monthly roundup of the best of the current Celtic music.

02-07 2/14/02 Highlights of the 2001 Southern Illinois Irish Festival
Recorded at Southern Illinois University exclusively for Celtic Connections, this week's program features musicians who appeared at the Southern Illinois Irish Festival in April 2001, including Connie Dover, Larry Nugent, Liz Carroll, Mick Moloney & Marie Reilly, Chulrua, The Dorians, Paddy League, Billy McComiskey & Zan McLeod. And a great time was had by all!

02-08 2/21/02 Band Spotlight on Danu
Danu is a seven-man traditional band from Ireland. With the recent American release of their second CD, they have secured their standing in the top ranks of Irish bands. Their American tour this spring will include an appearance at the Southern Illinois Irish Festival. This week's program will preview that tour by offering vocals and instrumental medlies from both outstanding albums.

02-09 2/28/02 Celtic Bag of Treats
There's no rhyme or reason behind this week's selections, though there will definitely be rhythm, memorable melodies, amusing and moving lyrics, and quality performances.

02-10 3/7/02 New Releases
We continue our monthly survey of the newest releases, as exciting and wonderful recordings just keep on rolling in!

02-11 3/14/02 Four Green Fields:The Provinces of Ireland
We'll cover music from the four provinces of Ireland--Ulster, Munster, Leinster, and Connaught--in this week's program that retraces some of the steps of St. Patrick.

02-12 3/21/02 Music of O'Carolan
Turlough O'Carolan, who died March 25, 1738, remains the best-known composer of tunes for the Irish harp, and a favorite source of music for many contemporary harpers and other musicians. This week we offer an all-Carolan program.

02-13 3/28/02 Fairport Convention Retrospective
In conjunction with the 30th-anniversary tour of this English band, "the world's best folk-rock band," we offer a retrospective of some of their best loved songs, covering all three decades.
