Singers continue to record new arrangements of the great narrative ballads of England and Scotland, as collected by Professor Francis Child in the late 1800s. The songs are still referred to by their number as listed in his collection, which includes well over 300 songs. We'll hear about five percent of that collection in this week's program, the fourth in an occasional series.

The button accordion as well as the piano accordion are both popular instruments for dance music in Britain, Ireland, Scotland, and North America, and this week's program features some of the current masters of this instrument.
  
04-17 4/22/04 Bands of Scotland
Scottish-based bands like Old Blind Dogs, Capercaillie, Silly Wizard, The Tannahill Weavers, Battlefield Band, and others are the focus of this week's program.

We dust off the LPs this week to keep in touch with some of the great Celtic music recordings of the past several decades.

Join host Bryan Kelso Crow for his monthly selection of some of the best tracks from new and recent CDs by leading Celtic performers.
  
04-20 5/13/04 Chieftains Matt Molly & Sean Keane
Virtuoso musicians Matt Molloy (flute) and Sean Keane (fiddle) have recorded as a duet as well as with The Chieftains and on their own solo albums. This week we sample from their rich repertoire of tunes, spanning several decades.

The great variety and vigor of British folk songs and dance music is the focus of this week's program, including the likes of Martin Carthy, June Tabor, Maddy Prior, Kate Rusby, Bill Jones, and Fairport Convention.

Highlights of the 2003 Southern Illinois Irish Festival include featured singer Cathie Ryan with her band, along with guest appearances by other Irish and Scottish music performers.

The record companies keep us busy sorting through new CDs to bring you the best new vocal and instrumental tracks by Celtic musicians today. And we thank them for it!.
  
04-24 6/10/04 Bloomsday Centennial: Music of James Joyce's Dublin
James Joyce's great novel of a day in the life of Dublin, "Ulysses," was set on June 16, 1904, the day Joyce first dated his future wife Nora Barnacle. As Dublin celebrates the centennial of its most famous literary day with a summer-long series of events, we commemorate Joyce's chosen day with music from Dublin, about Dublin, and referred to in the novel, including the voice of James Joyce himself.
