Irish singer, songwriter, and master of guitar as well as other instruments, Gerry O'Beirne, has been an influential force in Irish music since the late 1970s.  He visits our studio this week to talk about some of the highlights of his songwriting, recording, and producing career, as we feature some of his songs performed by Mary Black, Maura O'Connell, and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh.

Host Bryan Kelso Crow is due to be back early this month from a Study Abroad trip to Ireland with students and faculty from Forestry, and he is sure to bring back a full program's worth of CDs to share with listeners this week.

09-32  8/6/09 All in 4/4 Time
We focus this week on dance tunes that are all in 4/4 time, including reels, hornpipes, flings, polkas, and other forms, with some vocals in 4/4 time thrown in to give the musicians a break.

09-33  8/13/09  Music of Co. Galway
From Galway City to the most remote regions of this western county, music is a rich part of the culture and the history.  This week we look at some native Galway musicians, songs and tunes from the county, and one of the leading record labels in Ireland that is based in Connemara.

09-34 8/20/09  Karen Matheson & Capercaillie
One of the leading and most innovative Scottish bands since the 1980s has been Capercaillie, with lead singer Karen Matheson.  This week we celebrate the band's work as well as featuring songs from Karen's solo CDs.

Celtic favorites from past decades are dusted off for your enjoyment in this week's program.

09-37 9/10/09 Child Ballads VI
This is the sixth in our occasional series focusing on the classic ballads of England and Scotland as collected by Harvard Professor Child in the late 1800s.  These songs keep turning up in new recordings by some of today's leading Celtic and American musicians.

09-38 9/17/09  Music From the Sessions
One of the joys of playing Irish music is being able to find an informal music session in a new town, not just in Ireland but in many American cities and other parts of the world as well.  Some of the common session tunes are featured this week, along with recordings from pub sessions.

09-39  9/24/09 Celtic Collections
If you're lucky enough to find a "Celtic" CD section in a book or record store near you, you might be overwhelmed by all the CDs with "Celtic" in the title.  This week we will sort through some of the overly-sentimentalized or hackneyed or not-ready- for-primetime recordings to bring you some of the best from these Celtic collections.
